Bentonite is an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate clay consisting mostly of montmorillonite. One of the first occurrences of bentonite was found in the Cretaceous Benton Shale near Rock River, Wyoming.

The fine particle size and high moisture absorption, that is, high swelling property of bentonite give bonding strength or adhesion to the mass of sand grains.

Properties –

  • High Swelling property
  • Increased Plasticity
  • High Bonding and Adhesion

Usage –

  • Foundry
  • Oil drilling
  • Civil engineering – Piling
  • Cosmetics
